Hi... I have a male lutino cockateil and i love him to death...but i feel really guilty leaving him alone during the day, even though i leave the tv on for him. I would like to get him company but i dont want to get a female because I would not be able to take care of them if they begin to breed. Does anyone know if two males would get along?

I had the same concern. I have 4 parakeets that help to keep my cockatiel company. I would not recommend getting another cockatiel as they may decide to bond and become quite independent. My mother has a bird like that. You bring another cockatiel around and he decides all humans are bad, and attacks us. If there are other types of birds around, he is OK. But, with the parakeets, they are easy to take care of and keep my baby company. I do keep the birds in separate cages. But, I do let them all out to play together. It is so cute when they play their little bird games.

As long as your cockateil has those 3 companions it should be fine. I had a lovebird who was alone when i went to school so i got it 2 more lovebirds so it wouldn't be lonely. Put your cockateils cage next to your parakeets cage so they can interact and chirp to each other.

I wouldn't reccomend it. They can get along, but my two males fight a lot. Keep toys in the cage, lots of different types, rotate them every 2-3 weeks. Turn on cartoons for him when you leave, they love them!

My male lived alone for almost 12 years before I felt guilty and purchased another bird. As a result, I lost my close bond with my tiel when he bonded with the other bird.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me. My addy is in my profile.

Yes, they can get along fine. Make sure you have a very large cage so they can have their own areas if they want. Have lots of perches and toys to keep them busy. I moved my 6 month old male in with a 9 yr old I adopted. They do fine. My friend has a 15 yr old male and a 18 yr old male that have lived together their whole lives. They argue a bit, but no fighting.

It depends on the temperament of the two birds; actually the temperament of yours. If he is gentle or young, you can get him a young male companion and they should get along fine. As long as neither of them is very aggressive. Most cockatiels aren't very aggressive, but some are.
Another solution I've found is to give the cockatiel a little parakeet. You need to pick a gentle parakeet, as these tend to be more aggressive than cockatiels. But when one of my elderly cockatiels died, the widow started laying eggs and wouldn't stop; I didn't want to get her another cockatiel, so I got a parakeet and they got along famously; she stopped laying eggs. She finally died, and now I have another cockatiel living with the parakeet.

You can put two males together. If you are interested in buying a cockatiel, please let me know. I have a couple of babies that are ready for a home. They have been hand fed, so they are real sweet. The prices are better than you pay going to a pet store. Email me if interested @ ktuzzolo@yahoo.com

what i do so that the tiels dont lay eggs, is that i dont put a nest in their cage, that way they dont see one and they dont have the need to mate....it worked so far....
