From B&H Photo:

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT (a.k.a. 350D) 8.0 Megapixel, SLR, Digital Camera (Black) Kit with Canon 18-55mm EF-S Lens and SanDisk 2GB CompactFlash Card - $630.80

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT (a.k.a. 350D) 8.0 Megapixel, SLR, Digital Camera (Black) with Canon 17-85mm EF-S IS USM Lens - $999.95 This doesn't leave room for a memory card or a flash, but it's worth looking at for the better lens and "IS" on the lens, which is a good upgrade. See: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-S-17-85mm-f-4-5.6-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx

The Canon 430EX Speedlite E-TTL II Shoe-Mount Flash (Guide No. 141'/43 m at 105mm) is a good choice, but it's $240, so you wouldn't combine it with the 17-85 IS lens.

Since you will be using flash a lot, the Nikon D80 should be your first choice. It has something a lot of other semi pro's don't and that is wireless flash control built in.

It takes beautiful photos nad beats the other 10mp in image quality. http://www.popphoto.com/cameras/3569/10mp-dslr-shootout.html

Check out spec at dpreview:

And choosing a Nikon is a safe choice as you build up your accessories and lenses in case you turn pro.

The D80 with an 18-55 lens is right at $1k.

Err... your in a bit of a pinch. You can get the XTi for about 750 but the Speedlite 430EX is about $280. I would get the lens kit and add on a better lens later.
