It wasn't a miracle. It was the following:
A gigantic coronal mass ejection (CME) occurred on May 13, 2000. Probably the largest of the year was recorded by NASA. Every eleven years our sun goes through a period of solar storms and these storms have been with us for
centuries of recorded history. Solar flares emit high-speed particles that cause the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. Radiation from the solar flares can give passengers in aircraft a dose of radiation equivalent to a medical X-ray. Severe weather on Earth, volcanoes and earthquakes may be all tied to this activity on the sun. Satellites, communications, silicon circuitry, portable phones and alternating current outlets can all be effected. If your appliances start acting up it may be the result of these solar storms. Even severe headaches may be tied to the sun's activity.

Do your research. The book most information on the subject is based on was written by a priest (father De Marchi) that "interviewed" the witnesses decades after the fact. "There comes a point when you have to start believing other people's testimonies" ABSOLUTELY NOT WITHOUT EVIDENCE. NEVER. EVER. People make things up without realizing it, exaggerate, are prone to confirmation bias, wishful thinking, selective/manufactured memories... the list goes on. There is a reason why simple testimony is not accepted as evidence in a court of law.

This miracle had been predicted three months earlier, on July 13, 1917. At that time, Lucy of Fatima appealed to Our Lady:
“I should like to ask You to tell us who You are, and to work a miracle so that everyone will believe that Your Grace has appeared to us.”
Our Lady answered,
“Continue to come here every month. In October, I will say who I am and what I want, and I will perform a miracle so that all might see in order to believe."
And on October 13, 1917, 70,000 people witnessed the great Miracle of the Sun. 70,000 people saw the sun dance in the sky, and then plummet toward the earth. These witnesses, including Jacinta’s father, Ti Marto, tell us they were terrified. He said “The sun ... began to move and dance until it seemed that it was being detached from the sky and was falling on us. It was a terrible moment.”
According to the witnesses, the miracle lasted about 8 minutes. And after the sun “returned to its place in the sky”, the ground, which before the miracle had been saturated due to an all-night driving rain, was dry. Likewise, the clothes of those who had been standing all day in the rain before the miracle, were completely dry.
During the great Miracle of the Sun, witnesses say that they could look directly at the sun without it blinding them or hurting their eyes in any way.
In this century, Our Lady worked for us one of the most astonishing miracles of all time — a public miracle predicted three months in advance, and witnessed by 70,000 people. This miracle was even reported in the liberal, anti-clerical, Masonic newspaper, O Seculo.
The newspaper report from October 15, 1917, said:
“We saw the huge crowd turn toward the sun which appeared at its zenith, clear of the clouds. It resembled a flat plate of silver, and it was possible to stare at it without the least discomfort. It did not burn the eyes. It did not blind. We would say that it produced an eclipse. Then a tremendous cry rang out and the crowd nearest us were heard to shout: ‘Miracle!... Miracle!... Marvel!... Marvel!...’ Before the dazed eyes of the people, whose attitude transported us to biblical times, and who, dumb-founded, heads uncovered, contemplated the blue of the sky, the sun trembled, it made strange and abrupt movements, outside of all cosmic laws, ‘the sun danced’, according to the typical expression of the peasants.”
This by far has been the greatest public miracle that has been worked by Heaven since Our Lord founded His one true Catholic Church.

Yes! If you look further into this you will find that 100's of other apparitions appeared at the same time. Which of course was satan tring to fool others! When holy water was shaken at the false apparitions they disappeared and left the smell of sulfur. Anytime there is one true apparition, there are others occuring which are the work of the devil, this can be found throughout history and almost anytime something miraculous happens. My favorite Saint. Bernadette is another one of these stories where other apparitions occured, but where not true. Another way to know if an apparition is true of Our Lady is to pray the rosary with the apparition, if the apparition is true Our Lady will not say the "Hail Mary" as this would be praying to herself. Investigate and research this, you will find it very interesting. GOD EXISTS!

Well, it proves the existence of the spirit realm, but not necessarily proves the existence of God.
Our Lady of Fatima, Lourdes, and Guadalupe, and even Mujegourie (sp?) all prove that Mariology is alive and well.
With the focus off Jesus, and onto Mary, we can see how Satan can transform himself into an angel of light, just as the Bible says.

Unfortunately there is nothing that will convince a stubborn soul to submit to God. Lucifer and the fallen angels had direct knowledge of God and still rejected Him. The problem is not lack of evidence, it is pride. Pray for those who resist God that their pride may be overcome.

It’s mass delusion. Such behavior is commonly observed in developing humans, just look how many people believe fictional books are fact, and notice also how many believe they are having a “personal relationship” with invisible beings, and not to mention how many believe that such invisible beings speak to them.

"witnessed by possibly as many as 100,000" - LOL...really hedging your bets there, aren't you??
In answer to your question, mass hysteria is responsible for many such religious and non-religious events.
