Some men and even women will enflict pain on themselves to keep from doing it to their partner. When in a relationship or even with family matters the person will get upset over something and start to hit, bite, punch, or create pain on themselves to keep from doing it to someone else they love. It isn't normal to do it and most people are medicated for it. You should mention to him that you think the two of you should go to counseling or maybe you could go with him to his family physician. If you wan to stay with him, it will help him more if he know's and feel's that you are supportive of him helping himself. Just try and see if that work's!

i think that the guy has some serious emotional issues and you should leave quick and fast and never go back ,if you are worried about something as in you think he will hurt you or whatever then you can get someone to help you get out of that house and good luck ,it sounds like it is going to get worse before it gets better if it ever gets better take care of yourself girl ,sounds like you are going to need it and be careful find you a guy that isn't a nut case and date him latter

You just need to leave, he is a head case. He has real problems that you don't need to be part of. He isn't going to get better and if you stick around it easily could get worse...for you. This is a really bad situation, get out now and don't look back no matter what he says he will do to himself.

I think you need to get out. It sounds like he's trying to get some control over you. By him hitting himself, he has you thinking that you are the only one who can get him to stop. He will probably stop hitting himself and start hitting you. Get out, contact the police if you have too, but leave.

He is controlling you. He is smart enough not to do so directly (hitting you), but also knows that you will respond to him hitting himself. So he gets you to do what he wants you to do, gets the reassurance that "it's alright" and that's what he wants. You are enabling him.
If you love him, get counseling together. If you don't, leave. But choose fast.
