Nobody has to swear on a Bible. Atheists can just vow to tell the truth. This was actually upheld in court in several states.
It's not like the Bible has kept anybody from lying in court anyway. Religion is a poor predictor of morality.

As a Christian I wouldn't swear on the Bible either (Matthew 5:34-37). If you refuse to swear on the Bible in the UK, they get you to swear on the state or government, and I assume it would be the same elsewhere.
Matthew 5:34-37
However, I say to you: Do not swear at all, neither by heaven, because it is God’s throne; nor by earth, because it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King. Nor by your head must you swear, because you cannot turn one hair white or black. Just let your word Yes mean Yes, your No, No; for what is in excess of these is from the wicked one.

When I was a Quaker and it was forbidden to take oaths of any kind, I found that I could do an "affirmation" of my intent to tell the truth. There fore I didn't have to swear or make an oath at all. Now that I am Wiccan I don't know what I'll do. Perhaps the "Affirmation" will work then as well.

you know that whole swearing on the bible is bull crap when it comes to God. If u want God to do somthing with the lier, as some form of punishmen with the sinner or if u want to frighten a christian person to speek the truth, Say to him do u sware before the Father, his son Jesus, and before the holyspirit. The one who knows all truth, to tell the truth. That would get me to tell the truth. I would as a snake lie on the bible anyday. The bible won't hurt me.

Courts in my state don't even have bibles--they just require that you raise your right hand and swear that you will tell the truth!

Well - as a Christian I am told not to swear by anything, instead to let my yes be yes and my no be no.
My husband had to testify in court once and he said "I solemnly affirm" that what he said was true. So that would work for anyone who didn't want to "swear".

What a crock.........
Youd think people would just grow up.
Hows a bunch of paper going to make anybody tell the truth.
How about 10,000 volts in a sensitive
area to make a swear and the victim has
his finger on the button.

I'd ask the judge if I could swear on something more meaningful to me -- like a dictionary or a volume of the encyclopedia.

You are not required to swear in on a Bible. I believe that some people choose to, but you don't have to.
