I think corporations have finally gotten their heads out of their a$$e$ and figured out that they could make money off of people who care about the environment. I don't know whether or not their efforts are tried and true (hybrid cars, smart cars, etc.) but check out the price tags... they're not cheap. Mercedes wants $15k for that tiny little car? Please! And the Hybrids WITH a carpool sticker are going for a premium because they've made the DMV stickers ridiculously hard to obtain... it's just absurd! You think some genius at the DMV isn't selling those babies like they were fake ID's? Of course they are.
So as far as big business is concerned, I think for most of them it's 'show me the money'. The only plus side may be that there is hopefully some actual research going on that will help stop Global Warming that there might otherwise not be if they weren't hoping to score ome major profits from it. As far as your every day consumer, of course it's about the environment. Why would we pay more for any product unless we cared about what it does to our environment?

Good question. I would say 'going green' is a concept that is a positive influence on society and the environment. If it becomes a part of the American culture, it becomes more and more a way of life. That's the kind of change the world needs.
As for the dark side, it's the same for anything. Anytime an idea becomes popular, you'll always have people trying to make a buck off of it. In the beginning, it will be hard to tell who is really out to make the world green and who is a money hungry fraud. In time, we'll adapt and create regulations to help weed out the parasites.
So the real answer is no. Going green is essential for the survival of all life on planet Earth. The sooner and the more thoroughly 'green' we become the better. Also, it's not just about what we buy, it's also about how we act. Sometimes we just have sacrifice a little to do what's right. That might mean paying a little extra once in awhile.

Both!! With all of the research being done on global warming and the effects it is having on animals, weather, etc., it's hard not to worry about the environment. 'Going green' is a good way for people to start to take action to help the cause, and for many people that's all the reason they need.
But let's face it. We live in a world ruled by greed and it seems like people are stocking up on energy efficient products and hybrid cars just so they can say they have the newest technology.
Then again, if someone is getting 30 more mpg than you, saving MEGA bucks doing it, and helping the environment at the same time... why question it?

Going green will only work if the "green" winds up in our wallets.
Otherwise, it will flop like all the other environmental movements.
If America can save a buck, or even make a buck off this, rather than just spend, I'm all for it. The trick is convincing people.
All the arguing about whether or not it is necessary or effective is just an excuse to do nothing, and there's no profit in that.
EDIT (5-24) - Don't forget the Fun Factor... People shelled out for SUVs to get more belly room and to see over everybody else's SUV, even though it cost them at the pumps. If you can make Green cool, people will be zipping around in high-torque hybrids just to get the looks.

Forcing the American people to go green because we are the only ones on earth who can afford it is about slowing down and lowering our economy so that we will no longer be a superpower in the world.
This is what the bunk about global warming is really about the democrats want to control the uneducated Americans so that they can rule us with an iron fist. the world governments want to reduce our standard of living so that we will not have as much clout on the world stage.
Going green is about so much more than money. And has very little to do with the environment.

The phrase "going green" suggests making earth friendly choices.
There is certainly money to be made by promoting "green" products or services, but I can live with that.
The "green" products are often not the most profitable. Toyota makes a lot more money selling a Corolla than a Prius, but he hope is that it will bring more people into the showrooms. It seems to work.

It might be. Someone is always trying to make a buck off any new idea that comes along, and the more saintly-sounding the idea, the more bucks people will shell out in its name. This is why energy solutions need to be reviewed very critically. That being said, there has been a lot of bad press in recent months about Big Oil alternatives (like ethanol), and I can't help but think that the bad press might be just as money-driven as the good press.

"Going Green" is more for the environment than for money, but most people will go green to save a few extra bucks.

Going green is something that I feel is a moral imperative. We do it as much as we can. Lots of the different ways that you can go green end up saving some money, but they usually cost more to begin with.
