When my son first got his braces we were told that the only thing that worked for braces pain was Advil. Nothing else came close. It will continue to hurt every time they adjust your braces. The pain should go away 2 to 3 days after they adjust. Try the Advil by son lived on it for the two years he had braces. Good Luck and try not to think about how long this will take, but how great you will look when it's over.

Usually the pain will last for about a week when you first get your braces. After that the dr will periodically "tighten" your braces. This will start the pain back up. As time goes on the pain lasts only a day or two per visit. Generally advil or tylenol helps...

The first few days you have them on are the worst. When they are tightened, it is never as bad. Get some Tylenol and take it. You should have Tylenol ready each time you go to the Orthodontist because it will help manage the pain. It is all worth it because you will end up with a beautiful smile.

It will take a few days for the pain and swelling to subside. One of the best things I found for this was to rinse with warm salty water. It doesn't taste great, but it helps with the swelling. Also, aspirin or ibuprofen can help a lot. Another thing I found that worked well was a heating pad; it looks a touch odd over your mouth, but it does help. I used to use a gel-type eye-mask that had been warmed when I was going to sleep - the ones that you can heat in the microwave (usually for sinus infections) ought to work well, and who cares what you look like in your room in bed???
Feel better soon!

the initial pain last for a couple of days and then you just get used to them. but when you go in for a tightening then your mouth hurts all over again. when the wires that are run through the braces has moved(from the teeth moving) the wires can sometimes poke the back of your mouth. this can rub the skin raw and hurt. the best thing to do to to make sure that anytime that your braces are tightened that the orthodontist cuts and takes the sharp wire off. have him cut the wire as short as possible. but don't worry it will be over soon and then you will look great!!!!

I get mine off in June. I've had them for around 2 1/2 years. In the beginning they hurt. After a few days I could stand it. After a week or two I had gotten used to it. The longer that you wear them the less you feel the pain of doing stuff to them. But everyone is different and you may feel it longer or shorter than I did. Good luck!!!
P.S. Follow their directions EXACTLY!

I got my braces when I was in 7th grade (I'm 23 now). It's been so long ago but I think I remember it taking a week for the pain to go away. You'll be fine.
