Yes it will. People used it many years ago prior to the new products with sunscreen. It does not provide any SPF(sun protection factor), so it is not advisable to use, especially just starting a tan. Use a tanning product with a SPF for your skin type or contact your doctor.

For years, many have used child oil as a tanning agent, however does this old method definitely work, or can it damage the pores and skin?

It will work in that it will help give you a tan but it won't block out UV rays. If you don't care about that, then here's one of the best baby oils to use:
http://www.amazon.com/Burts-Bees-Nourishing-Fluid-Bottles/dp/B006L1OA6M/ref=sr_1_4?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&tag=cyberish-20&qid=1404981384&sr=1-4&keywords=baby+oil
Now if you want to reduce skin damage due to the sun, use proper sun tanning lotion. These are the best ones: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_p_36_5?keywords=tanning+lotion&qid=1404981560&tag=cyberish-20&rh=n%3A3760901%2Ck%3Atanning+lotion&rnid=386636011&low-price=&high-price=100&x=12&y=13

Absolutly not. That is the worst thing for someone to do. That is even worse than going out with nothing on your skin. If you want a dark tan use Tanning oil like spf 2 or something. Baby oil will increase the ability of the sun to burn you skin and it gives you no protection from the dangerous rays of the sun that cause skin cancer and sun poisoning.
