Most politicians will use their moral or religious background as a platform for their campaign. President Bush has emphasized more than others though. It is ironic that many Christians who preach "love thy neighbor" can be so intolerant. And while Jesus pushed for peace and non-violence, human nature has lead many people to regress to basic instincts :violence and jealousy.
People who are hypocrites in what they preach and what they do, are like that because putting the title of "Christian" on oneself justifies all that he or she has done wrong. While not everyone may rely on religion to paint their image as moral, everybody at some point contradicts themselves.
In the 2004 election, the majority of people who voted for President Bush said they did so because of "morals". What's funny is that Bush hasn't stood by any of the "morals" that he so preached when he was campaigning. Many people think that President Bush is an idiot, however he is smart enough to understand that his religious claims get him votes.
You are completely correct in claiming this as contradictory, however as long as the American people are ignorant enough to believe that a Christian background determines a good President, we will continue to have people like President Bush in office. I only hope that people can start voting on the actual ISSUES, and not how religious a candidate is.

Don't be naive - Bush will say whatever his constituency wants to hear. Before he gained the support of the so-called Religious Right, Bush was no more of a Christian than the man in the moon.

There was also a story in the Bible about a young shepherd who, with the help Gods strength, was able to kill one of the greatest enemies of Gods followers, Goliath the giant, with a slingshot and a single stone. It says "thou shalt not kill," not "thou shalt be a doormat!"

Bush is one of the least Christian world leaders. He and his colleagues have contributed a great deal to the downfall of true Christianity.
