A couple of times in the last couple of months I've come to my computer and found that it has rebooted. Power outage doesn't seem likely as e.g. my clock radio time is not off. (This computer does start up again as soon as power returns.)

Does WinXP keep any kind of log indicating whether the shutdown was unexpected, or compelled by some process?

Thanks.

Event Viewer in Administrative Tools under Control Panel will show logs of all shutdown events and when they're happening. Compare all logs, identifying time of shutdown and seeing what application is running at time of shutdown. Try turning off those applications and see if still happens, then turn one by one back on until you identify which is the problem.

Check not only Windows Automatic Updates but automatic updates that you've set up for any programs that you have. Could be anti-virus or anti-spyware programs etc.. Check through your settings and see if anywhere says to restart automatically.

If nothing found, check Microsoft website with phrases: XP restart

Have not heard of restart problem in XP though quite a few shutdown problems.

If your computer shuts down on its own, one very probable reason is Heat. If your sys tem gets too hot, windows automatically shuts it down to prevent it from overheating and exploding. I suggest you check the power supply fans, processor fans if they are working fine. If the problem persist, maybe youd like to open one side-panel and put a deskfan next to your computer to circulate the air.

Another reason is file system failure, maybe some files on your system are already corrupted which causes it to reboot.
Virus is another reason of system shutdown.

Most probably, you dont have to worry about the last two, i think its just heat.

Go to my computer right click go to properties, then automatic updates and change the setting to download but let me choose when to install them. Automatic update will shut off your computer.

there's probably a log in the windows files but I don't know what its called.
If your using automatic updates windows will restart itself if necessary after the update(s) has been installed
