The best thing that I can tell you to do is create a carpool. I know you said you lived in a rural areas but you could create a carpool for many people so that the members could help the enviroment.

Reduce pollution I would just say to have your car checked every so often to make sure you dont have any leaks or anything.

Avoid impulse trips: don't go to town unless you need at least two things, or plan your trips in advance to get maximum use of every trip.

Go green: If you must drive, perhaps you can purchase a hybrid or electric vehicle.

Maintenance: If you cannot buy a new car, try to get the most of the one you have. Always use the proper fuel grade; keep the engine tuned; check tire inflation; remove non-essential objects from your back seat and trunk that add pounds to your vehicle's total weight; and avoid fuel-wasting driving habits such as jackrabbit starts.

Carpooling: If you know someone who is going the same direction, maybe you can carpool with them.

Try telecommuting: you mentioned that you have to drive, but maybe your employer has a program (or would consider starting one) that allows you to work from home.

Bicycle: You didn't mention how far you had to travel, but if its within ten miles or so, consider taking a bike. Since you are in a rural area, traffic would not be a big issue. You might lose a few pounds over time, but is that a bad thing?

A coal factory is on an industrial scale, and uses turbines to produce electricity. This is a very efficient process. Energy is lost transmitting the power through the electrical grid. A gas motor uses a reciprocating piston that is moving back and forth, it also must operate at a temperature that keeps its parts from malfunctioning. So much energy is radiated into the air and out the exhaust pipe. Electric car will become popular when graphene capacitors can be made small enough and cheap enough to create an energy density 20 times lithium ion batteries. Then you can have a 400 mile drive in a full size car that handles like a gas car.

Well if you don't have regular public transportation ie.Bus one thing that you can do is do all your errands in one day such as going to the bank grocery shopping and if you have a post office box go to the Post Office maybe once a week also you can pay bills on line so that you don't have to run around paying bills at certain places and also if you have an urge to go shopping at the mall instead of going to the mall you can go shopping on line its quicker also depending on how far you live from certain places such as a corner store if you need to get a milk during the middle of the week you can walk or ride a bike to go get it instead of driving Other options would be to set up carpooling with a group of friends you and a group of friends Can do grocery shopping together on the same day and also if you live near someone you work with you can carpool with them as well Also keep your car maintained because if your engine oil is low or something else is wrong like if you need a new muffler or starter you use more gas if your car is not maintained also when you come to a stop at a red light and it turns green do not start off fast start off slowly then you can go faster

My family lives in a rural area. Although we are less than 10 miles from the nearest store, we make it a point to combine trips into town. I keep a list of things I need, and places in town that I need to conduct business, and try to limit my trips to once or twice a week.

I do a lot of parent teacher conferences by phone or computer. My kids ride the school bus to school, I don't drive them.

We always use the vehicle that's best on gas whenever feasible, especially lately. The gas guzzler has been parked in the yard now for over 2 weeks.

Get a carpool together for work and for the childrens school. This is one way to save on energy and pollution. Also you could invest in a motorcycle, both men and women are riding more motorcycles. This will also reduce the gas prices and energy and pollution.

There are several ways to reduce pollution while in a rural area.
1) You could buy a more fuel efficient car.

2)You could convert to bio diesel.
This would lower emissions and the release of cancer causing chemicals.
But this will only work if you have a diesel engine.

3)You could convert to natural gas if you have a gas powered engine.

Keeping up on the regular maintenence on you car is a big one. It's amazing how a little thing like low tire pressure can lower your mpg. Close your windows when driving on the highway or at faster speeds. Having open windows causes loss of aerodynamics which lowers your mpg. Take your foot off the gas when you are approaching a stop, and accelerate in a smooth manner. Combine as many errands as you can into each trip. If the car is going to be ideling for a couple minutes, and it makes sense (waiting for someone in a store, etc.) or go inside instead of drive-thrus. Definately get rid of extra weight in car.

Start by measuring. How much energy are you currently using? How much pollution are you currently creating? Ask yourself, is it REALLY a problem?? If it is, am I responsible for it? If you are, you'll have to make some decisions about your lifestyle; quit driving? If that's not an option, then you might be better off thinking about all the good you can do in this world, for the people in your life and those less fortunate, and less time worrying about things you cannot change. My guess is you'll feel better about life.

You have to drive anywhere these days.

My suggestion is if you have 2 cars, and if you need to do heavy lifting with one(if you work on a farm), have one that does heavy lifting and one small car just for getting around that's better on gas.

This is what a lot of rural people in my general area seem to do.

Basically they have one car for work, and one for play, instead of using the same one for both. Seems to be more popular now, people that I know who have families in rural areas say that their families are doing this, just to save gas.
