I am a non-theist.
Something about this greatly disturbs me.
The potential for abuse in this area is enormous.
People will try, regardless of the consequences.

Andrew Crosse created life from science way back in 1837
edit: and by the way the response Bloody Kisses describes is exactly what Crosse had to endure once word of his achievement got out.

When I taught science, amino acids were created in the lab by simulating lightening striking what was supposed to be the primordial soup mix. Amino acids are not life and they were created from minerals, water and vitamins that were already created. Today, scientist can still only create the amino acids. Nothing more after all the years, has come about.

If this happens, the scientists will be making something out of previously-made material. Is that 'creating'? No - absolutely not. That 'make their own dirt' line has some power to it - Create life out of nothing - now that's a big deal.

There was ligthning. All of a sudden different types of amino acid gathered together. Left handed amino acids only, form a straight line attaching themselves in a very long line in a very accurate order.( one mistake it will not form ) to form a protein, and all of a sudden different types of protein attaching themselves together to form a single cell, all of sudden different cell gather together again to form a living organism.
it has to be in perfect order, in perfect situation, in time and in perfect temperature. ( without oxygen)
It it like saying a tornado past through a junkyard and formed a boeing 747.
I tell you many believe in that, it sounds faith to me.
The real issue here is, many don't like the idea of God, cause it means morality.

It is interesting Betty..., that you acknowledge that man has never created a living cell.
Yes, they stir genes in a petra dish and create mutations, use chemistry to alter molecules (our liver synthesizes about 300 chemicals) yet in all their genius, they have never structured an amoeba.
True, man, using their "intelligent design" may some day create life, I'd like them to create just one peacock feather.
I see evidence of intelligent design when I look at the splendidly colored and immaculately dressed macaws in trees nearby.
And when I clean the yard of a hunk where a dog randomly picked a dumping zone--that is random selection.
Then I appreciate the majesticity of our Immaculate Creator.
Blessings, One-Way

No it won't, and you can take that to the bank my friend.
We are impotent at creating life .... we need a living or live article to reproduce and no one has done it from a dead article in the past and no one will do it in the future from Mankind except the Messiah Jesus who did it by the Wish of God, when he created a bird and blew into it to give life and raised the dead ... all by the Will of God.

Does it matter what people will say? They are doing it anyway. Will it change the world? No.
