Go to AutoZone, buy 3M Molding Tape - it's like 5 bucks.
Remove the trim completely, then remove the old tape from the vehicle and the trim you removed... I suggest wiping it down with mineral spirits really quick to remove dirt and some of the leftover adhesive.
Take the roll of molding tape and cut it to length, apply to the molding that you removed, and then peel a small (2-3 inch) part of the other sides film off and start remounting your trim.
I dont suggest peeling the film all the way off and then trying to slap it on the side of the car, you could drop it in the sand and it would turn into a nightmare.
Make sure you press hard when remounting the trim.
After everything is mounted, your good to go!

Same thing happened to my 98 Golf last year. I used clear silicone - the kind that you get at the home store for $3, and a piece of wood wedged against the ground to hold the rubber trim in place for an hour or so. So far it has not come off again.
You don't have to worry too much about what;s left from the original adhesive tape, because that only sits in the groove in the middle. I applied the silicone across the entire surface. Just make sure you wipe off any dirt and other loose material.

you need to remove all old adhesive from the door and trim, getting it off the trim is the most difficult. You could get a new piece and have it painted if need be and it should not be too expensive. If you glue it on you may damage the paint surface only to have it fall off again. Clean both areas with 3m surface prep to ensure all residue is removed, rubbing alcohol wont clean into the pores of the paint. Forgive my spelling but isop... alcohol works better. But, as I wrote above, removing the adhesive from the old trim is very difficult

It may be a pain to reinstall it with two-sided tape but if you glue it on, you'll have to chisel it off if you ever want to remove it and glues sometimes doesn't always hold well either if not prepped properly or not hold in certain spots...then it's a mess. Best to remove all the old tape from the molding and door with plastic scraper or popscicle stick and WD-40 for residue, clean the areas well with rubbing alchohol...then apply new two-sided tape to the molding and reattach--pressing firmly. Tape the molding in place with masking tape for a couple of hours.

You can get double sided sticky tape from an autobody supply shop. Which is used for this purpose. Much better than what you find in a big box store.
