You could learn on your own but if you are really determined to be a better guitarist, you must attend guitar lessons in musical schools. They have ladderized programs for their students and most techniques are learned from the skillful experiences of others. That would better guide you and enhance your capability to learn.

The primary reason for one-on-one instruction by a qualified guitar teacher is that the student will learn good habits initially instead of bad habits that will stay with him for years. There are techniques involved that aren't shown in beginning guitar booklets.

I recommend that you find a qualified instructor and take at least two months' of lessons. Learn basic music theory while you're at it.

Yes, students can learn on their own, but not everyone has the will and drive to excel at guitar playing as I did.

If you're already musically inclined, meaning you know your scales and have some sort of pitch, you should be able to learn guitar on your own. I mean, I taught myself when I was 13.

If not, then definately get an instructor. What's also good about an instructor is that they'll teach you to read music notes.

Please! For the love of Oz stay away from Tab. If you do plan on teaching yourself, add "Reading Music" to your lessons.

you CAN learn on your own. But you'll learn faster if someone helps you out. Because almost every instrument requires basic musical knowledge. Besides, learning on your own is very hard and frustrating (my own experience). Sometimes your fingers hurt or can't bend or you can't follow up to the rythm. Find someone, a friend or relative of yours who has more experience in playing guitar to help you learn. The result will be much better.
