What drives so many people to plant bombs, do suicide attacks, shoot, torture virtually anyone within reach? BTW, I am for U.S. troops leaving immediately. I do not see that U.S. presence in Iraq is doing any good. They need to work out their own future.

there was a split between two groups of the followers of the prophet Mohamed about 40 years after his death......which became the Sunnis and the Shiites. At their most extreme they each think the other are heretics and apostates.
We had something roughly similar in the Catholic Church in the 1490s. when Northern Europeans broke from Rome and founded what became Protestantism; and if I remember right we spent the next 150 years killing each other in God's name ( yes, there were alot of other causes......nationalism, imperialism etc to the wars from 1500-1700 but there were religious starts an underpinnings to it all).
The problem in the Middle East is : Islam conquered a lot of the known worlds and was the center of learning and education after the fall of Rome up to about 1450.
Then their culture froze and hasn't gone much further. Europe has gotten past whatever you eat fish on Friday or pray in Latin or English; too many Muslims still want to kill the other based on whether they believe Mu hammed died in his wife's or his best friends' arms.......

the had history of war, but the Moslem's do not kill each others, The Russian pay to fight in Iraq and Gun to fight against the American, same was did by CIA in Afghanistan american pay to Ben laden and tale ban to fight with Russian, this is all about power , oil and politics
