It is a type of liquor made from herbs and has an anise or fennel flavour. It has an incredibly high proof and is illegal to sell in the US. It is legal in parts of Europe(France and possibly Belgium). It is a powerfully addictive and some may even say psychtropic drug.

I believe that Chrissy BE has put it best. However, there is one thing that I'd like to point out. The ingredient that has caused Absinthe to be banned is Southern Wormwood (highly toxic and psychoactive). Northern Wormwood, on the other hand, is not nearly as toxic (or psychoactive) nor is it banned in the U.S. This allows distilleries to produce a suitable version of Absinthe for U.S. comsumption. Having had real Absinthe, I can honestly say that the two I've tried here in the States are very, very poor examples of Absinthe.

it is wormwood extract- have only had the real stuff once from amsterdam- stuff was like 70 bucks a bottle- you have to pour it over sugar or it tastes miserable and it changes color when it hits the sugar- there is a lot of fake stuff out there if it doesn't change color or smells like alcohol it is prolly the fake stuff- when you smell the real thing it smells kinda earthy and doesn't get you "drunk" so much as it feels like you took a coupla tranquilizers- usually takes about 1-2 shots at maximum to do this

Extremely strong alcohol with wormwood. We went to Canada and got some and I've got to say it is really strong. It's like 70% alcohol.
