All cars equal? LMAO Are you serious that guy's got the same situation Petty had, only Nascar sets it up for Jeff, no way anyone can think these cars are equal. It is a joke too. Hell Jeff can win races with no water, and I'm pretty sure that wasn't his skill. The guy is a cry baby jerk, and I bet he won't race in anything but the best car, sorry I'm not going off on your question, but heard a guy say all cars are equal, as if to say Petty's not legit. But Gordon's cars are just as much better than the field than Petty's were, and I don't see him anywhere near 200 wins or having the championship lead either.

We don't have to "think" Jeff Gordon is the best; the FACTS show he IS the best.
Jeff Gordon is by far the best driver in NASCAR Cup Series from a past championship and total number of victories ranking.
He is also the best in NASCAR Cup Series this year in point and "Average Running Position".
Also, as you stated, the number of poles he has won is also impressive. There is no hotter driver right now --Jeff Gordon is showing why he will become the #1 winning driver in "modern" NASCAR racing (Petty being from the "pre-modern era").
We are fortunate to be witnessing history being made. We all can say we saw Jeff Gordon winning these races and championships to our grandkids.

I think he's overrated. Think about how he would have been had he not walked into this ride. He got lucky. I've seen other drivers that are just as good if not better than he is but didn't get the opportunity handed to them from the Busch Series. Look at the older drivers who had to show themselves first before they got the ride of a lifetime. As far leading in the poles, it seems anyone that drives a Chevy has a given to win a race. When you have half the drivers driving a Chevy the odds are against the rest...

I hate to burst your bubble but Jimmie Johnson has 8 more wins than Gordon since 2002 and beats him in every major statistical category (top 5s, top 10s, money earned and even championships) since he has been racing full time. Jeff Gordon is very good, and he does have more poles (of course) but Jimmie Johnson has been the best driver at Hendrick Motorsports almost since the day he arrived there.

Right now he is the best driver. Even though he crashed in the last race---still #1 in points. Good to see Mears win his first race. Hendricks wins again. He will rebound next race. Go #24

No, it doesn't make him the best driver. Personally I don't like the guy, yes he is having a good year so far, but I predict a DNF coming real soon for him. So he is leading the points, that still doesn't make him the best.

When Gordon can brag about winning more races than Dale Earnhardt or Richard Petty, then and only then can he be called the best. I personally don't think it will happen in the near future.
Dale Earnhardt had seven championships, seventy-six wins and all of them in the modern era. There is no doubt that he was the best in NASCAR. He was a master on the track. Dale Earnhardt left us while still on top of his game. He certainly had many more wins in him and a shot at his eighth championship. A shame that we lost him when we did.
Richard Petty has seven championships and 200 wins. He is ranked below Earnhardt because most of those wins came in a different era of NASCAR. It was easier to dominate back then.
As for the driver's that I root for, Jr. of course, along with Smoke.

He still has a ways to go to match Richard Petty and David Pearson but I think he's moved up to 3rd best all time
