I believe Islam does not suppress women at all. It is true Bangladesh has women president. I know this because I have different friends from there.

We as human beings should know and understand that religion is been truncated by our cultural believes and by each individual person. It is not Islam who suppresses women, it is different cultural factors that makes each country adjust their rules and accommodate religion to those rules and for their benefit.

For example .. would you say women in Peru are suppress because they have to take their husband's last name once they get married? would you blame that to Catholicism or to society???

There is a big difference between religion and culture. Do not blame religion because of culture and people. Islam gave women the right to inherent property/money when Qur'an was revealed about 1400 years ago. Is that suppressing women?

Islam gave women rights after been treated as objects and non valuable beings.We cannot keep blaming religion because of what each individual does to others and say it is on name of religion.

I'm not going to say Muslims don't oppress women...all people oppress women in the world, even women. Islam though, is not the reason Muslims oppress women. Years of systematic patriarchy and cultural ignorance is what makes Muslims oppress women.
People should know that there are very strong, very capable Muslim women who do not feel oppressed at all out there.

I am a muslim female and (obviously) i agree.
I really think women suppression is not about religion, although it is soo easy to say it exists only among muslims as it is the most targeted religion. women suppression is not at all about religion. it is like the blood in one's body, it depends on the person. If islam suppresses women then i wonder why my parents have taught me how to use the computer, bought me a laptop, and are allowing me to go to college.
i wonder why there are sooo many muslim females hanging around here if we were created to just scrub and wash.
However.....
just because women in muslim countries have become national leaders does not mean they are not suppressed in their countries(not religion).

If you notice the answers, there are some people who are giving examples of muslim countries that have stricter laws. But isn't this the point of the question? Not all muslim countries are the same. what does this tell you? its culture, not religion. If it was part of religion not to let women get educated than why is it that my own parents want so badly for me to finish university and go on to medical school even though it is hard for them to pay for it? Islam gave women so many rights they did not have before any historian can see that. I dont defend any muslims actions I only defend islam because although muslims can and have been wrong islam has not. If you mean hijab, then there is no proof that hijab is obligatory. women can wear it if they chose to. out of all my cousins, I am the only one who does and my parents actually opposed my decision to wear it at first.

polygamy is not as common as people think. muslim countries require the first wife's permission for the 2nd marriage to take place. I would never allow my husband to do so and if he did I would get a divorce. The verse that came allowing multiple marriages came after the battle of uhud where many women became widows and had no one to support them. women dont need that today

considering that women in the US have only been allowed to vote for a relatively short period of time, the US is the last country that should chastise anyone on women's rights. it is only in this current election that we have the 1st woman candidate with a legit shot at winning the presidency.

India, which has had female leaders, is pretty sexist.
