Cold sores are very common. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus, and are contagious; however not the same type as genital herpes.

You get cold sores from fever, menstruation, stress and exposure to the sun.

I have read that L-Lysine can help prevent or shorten the duration of cold sores. Also any pharmacy has many lip products to shorten the duration. If the cold sores are very common I suggest you get a doctor to prescribe an antiviral medication

Ask the doctor for Zoborax. There are also OTC, just ask the pharmacist. Actually salt works but so does the OTC Tanac.

Basically keep your hands off the area, let it heal and dry up.

Did you know cold sores are a form of chicken pox virus and you can spread it?

There have been to my knowledge, no home remedies that work. Prescription acyclovir is probably the best, and there is a topical ointment called Abreva which contains Docosanol which clears them up pretty quick. The Abreva is an on the shelf product.
