Contrary to poular belief, rats smel the least out of all the rodents I know. They actually smell a little bit like strawberries, it's hard to explain. They groom themselves like cats and are very clean and well mannered. Plus, if you raise them from babies, they will become very trusting and perch on you shoulder and come when you call them. All of my rats have never bitten me (I have owned seven plus fourteen babies). They are hardy animals and require alot less than other rodents. It took my parents just one glance at a baby rat (not the pink ones, but when they have fur) and she let me buy two. Good Luck!

Rats do NOT carry rabies! A rat would never survive the attack of a rabid animal. There has NEVER been a case of someone getting rabies from rats. They don't carry any other diseases that humans can get either. Lyme disease and Bubonic plague are carried by BUGS, not rats.

In fact, rats are very, very clean -- I know, I live with 6 of them! Rats smell hardly at all, especially if you keep the cage CLEAN (and that means cleaning EVERY DAY). Are you up to that?

Rats are intelligent and very affectionate. They make WONDERFUL pets -- but not CHEAP pets. First of all, you need at least TWO rats -- they are highly social and very unhappy if kept alone. Then you need a BIG cage, plus a wheel, house, hammock, food dishes, water bottle, food, treats, toys... But most of all, you have to be prepared if they get sick. Yes, rats MUST go to a vet if they get sick, and vets are expensive. Don't think your rats won't get sick, because almost all rats need to see a vet at some time in their lives. So if you can't afford a vet, do NOT get rats -- get gerbils. They can get sick, but overall they are healthier than rats. (Even so, you still need to be able to see a vet if necessary.)

One other thing -- rats only live about 2 years, 3 at most. It's very, very hard to lose your beloved pet rat -- are you SURE you want to do this?

If you really want pet rats (and you WILL get two, right?), you have to show your mom you are responsible enough to care for them. Do your chores WITHOUT being asked. Keep your grades up. Keep your room clean. Help around the house. And talk to your mom about it, without getting upset or emotional, no matter what she says.

Good luck!

We have 3 female rats. They live in a 4 foot tall ferret cage in my sons room. Rats are very clean animals and groom themselves all the time. We trained ours to use a litter box which helps with cleaning. Dumping the litter box a couple times a week and completely change the bedding once a week. Do not get an aquarium to house your rats, they hold in the smell and in my opinion are much harder to clean.
Rats are very social, you should get 2 same sex rats so they can occupy each other when you are not around. With time and patience you can train rats to do tricks.

I think you should maybe do some extra cleaning around the house and tell her that they don't stink hardly at all. I should know i have three and they are very sweet. They are very easy to take care of. 1. clean their cage once a week. (they hate dirty places) 2. give them food and water EVERYDAY! 3. set aside some exsra time to play with them for about 30 minutes. ( that makes them very happy) and you should get more then one because if you don't then they will get very lonely. I think 3 is the perfect amount because if you take one out to play with then the other 2 will still be acompanied. also give them baths at least 5 times a month or so. I give them about one every two weeks. Don't be afraid of putting them in the water either they are excelent swimmers.

THEY DON'T SMELL. Unless you don't clean them out at least once a week! Be sure that you really want a rat, as with any animal they need a lot of looking after and caring for.

rats only really smell strongly for two reasons :
1) they are kept in an aquarium
2) the cage isn't cleaned often enough

they can be bathed and some rats really do like having a bath. you will want two rats since they are social creatures and don't do well alone.

You can either keep them in a tank or there is a special shampoo made for them you can buy that at the pet store.
If they're in a tank They don't smell near as bad.
The shampoo works great to.Promise to your mom that you will
clean your rat every day.
I have got my mom to get a rat by cleaning my room,it works.
You could also clean their cage every two days.
I suggest that you do one of these.
tell your mom you will and if your mom is like mine it'll work.
Also your mom could give you extra chores for a while.

The only time rats smell is if they have a dirty cage. A rat is a better companion then any other rodent and I take mine everywhere she is allowed. It is in ways beter then a dog or cat becaouse they poop in their house and are clean

I don't remember where i heard this, but someone once said, if you want a dog, ask for a pony. Bartering works wonders, and don't be afraid to compromise. Ask yourself, what does my mom hate more than me having a rat that i already have, do, etc. And change that in exchange for your new little buddy.

Make a deal with her or something. Like it has to stay in a certain room all the time with the door shut, and if you want to see it you have to go in there, and before you come out you have to wash your hands and spray on perfume to get rid of the smell and stuff...there's a lot of ways to get what you want, you just have to know how.

Good luck!
