There is. There are authors who focus their stories around particular times in religious history, and write about how their fictional characters respond to what was going on at those times.
Ever here of The Prayer of Jabez? Jabez was mentioned one time in The Bible, and an author wrote an entire fictional novel about his life.

"Religious fiction" already exists as a category. It is it's own designation, right along with "western fiction", "science fiction", "romantic fiction", "fantasy fiction", "teen fiction" and "mystery fiction". A good trip to a Barnes and Nobles store will enlighten you on this one! You won't starve, either, because lots of these stores have nice coffee/donut shops inside. It's a really nice way to spend an afternoon...
Seriously, religious fiction has been around for a long time. It didn't start with the "Prayer of Jabez", obviously. For as long as people have been writing down inspirational stories, with people of faith as the central characters, there has been religious fiction. The most famous of these are the ancient Greek Myths (Herculese and the lot of them) and the Norse Myths (Odin and company). From Judaism, we have the stories of Susanna, Bel and the Dragon, and the Song of the Three Young Men. The list goes on and on.
Now, you will mostly find Christian-themed religious fiction in America, although there may be other faiths represented in that category (I just don't know of any).

Oh Gosh - there's already mountains of it, beginning with large lumps of the Old and New Testament, and skittering on through the Q'ran and all the local myths religions accrete as they proceed across the globe. Of course, science fiction can stimulate imagination, analysis, and critical thought on scientific and social issues. But religious fiction seems to put a large stop on all of that. Unless one has two minds, as some people, including a few scientists, seem to have. And then, of course, there are the fictions of politics, largely manipulated by religious fiction these days especially in USA. Enough, already!

Science fiction has actually been a tremendous asset to science. Much of what was science fiction in the past has become today's science.
Too, there is religious fiction. Many christian authors have written such. It is simply categorized as fiction or inspirational. It does exist and one can find it readily.

In this world there is fact, fiction, and belief.
Science fiction is based on fiction (according to the writers), while religion is based on beliefs.
You can prove (to most) that there aren't little green aliens taking over the planet as we speak, but you can't prove (to most) the existence of religion, therefore it's open to interpretation.
So if someone says religion is fact, that's their belief. If they say it's fiction, that's their belief too. But if someone says hydrogen is not an element, most people would say they're an idiot because science proves it (at least 99% of people would agree).

Religion-Fiction is very big with the Fundamentalists, or have't you heard of the "Left Behind" series? It's almost as good as their Bible.

Well, religion is based on man striving toward God. That is fiction as none are worthy to approach the only Holy One.
Now, relationship is real. God came to mankind in order to bring His children to Himself.
As my son's t-shirt says, "It is against my relationship to have a religion."

All religion is religion-fiction. The left behind series could also be termed as religious-fiction.
