It is illegal, and you can be prosecuted if you are found to have obtained a new tax id only for the purpose of getting a new credit file.

NO it is not legal, it is fraudulent and you will get caught. the FTC (that's the Federal Trade Commission) just recently announced that consumers can be prosecuted for following steps that were illegal, even if advised to do so by a credit repair company. Also, please know that they cannot accept any money from you until they have done what they promised to do in a written contract. If you need help with your own credit and are willing to do the work it requires, I can help you improve your credit the right way, and at a fraction of the cost.

Its called Identity Fraud. The 9 digit number in question would be a social security number. The only time you can legally get a new social security number is if Social Security messes up and gives your number to someone else.

Sorry. It's illegal for that purpose. Don't do it because sooner or later it will catch up to you, and probably when you least expect it.
Do the right thing and clean up your credit report the legitimate way.

Most of the work plan is laid for you on the site. It might take a little time to clean up your file, but you'll be able to sleep at night.

Sorry but it's illegal.
According to the 2007 edition of the Consumer Action Handbook and I quote "It is a Federal crime to make false statements on a loan or credit application, to give a false S.S.N., or to obtain a Employer Identification Number from the I.R.S. under false pretences".

I believe it is being investigated. Regardless a mortgage company will pull your credit with your social security number. It is kind of pointless to do and you may be tried for fraud. It should be illegal. I would definitely avoid doing that.
