I mean the creator of the comic Cathy was talking about how everyone's jealous of the graduates of her college, but just because someone gets a diploma doesn't make them better people.

I agree. I also think it's gone way over the top celebrating things like preschool, 8th grade and High School graduations. You're SUPPOSED to graduate from them! LOL

The idea of the graduation CEREMONY being too serious is not rediculous. I have one complaint about many "ceremonies" these days is that they are NOT taken seriously. The definition of a ceremony is "a formal act or series of acts prescribed by ritual, protocol, or convention." Note the words FORMAL and RITUAL?

This pervasive informality has affected weddings, funerals, and many other CEREMONIES. Please, folks, don't get me wrong, there are still plenty of time to PARTY (for the happier ocassions: wedding receptions, graduation parties, etc.) or for informal interactions at "sadder" ocassions (funeral wakes, etc.). But this idea that the "partying" has to overlap into the ceremony is a relatively recent one.

There are good "societal" reasons for ceremonies. Let's keep them formal and SEPARATE from the partying. It's OKAY to be SERIOUS about somethings, it's even GOOD to be serious. When exchanging vows, don't you WANT those to be taken seriously by the couple AND their guests, and before God? At a funeral, shouldn't we take seriously the sadness and greiving of the family and friends? So, why shouldn't graduation CEREMONIES be taken seriously? The graduates have spent years dedicating themselves to enriching their minds and lives with an education, shouldn't the "institution" take the bestowal of their diplomas on the graduates seriously?

Not to say there aren't any "light" moments... but leave the celebrating/partying to AFTER the CEREMONY.

No they're not better people, but they do have better resumes.
