since the last incident with melamine in dog food with the Menu brand food, there has since been another recall and I am getting scared of feeding my dog any type of dry or wet food. I am currently feeding him Purina Beneful and have already bought another bag of it; I know this particular brand of dry food has not have any type of recall or contamination. What have you switched to when the recall happened? Are there better alternatives other than drugstore/supermarket brands? I don't want to resort to boiling chicken for him every meal.

Info on my dog: 14lb. male pom.

Wellness Super 5 Mix

Both are made of all natural human grade ingredients of US origins. No corn or wheat (empty fillers which provide no nutritional value to the dog and may contribute to food allergies) also no wheat gluten or rice protein (inexpensive ways to boost protein content - instead of real meat - and the cause of the recent recalls)
Purina Beneful (like most grocery-store brands) is stuffed full of corn, wheat, artificial flavors colors - read your bag, then either return it or throw it to the birds.

Your dog should not need more than 1/4 cup of either of the foods I recommended, twice a day. They may appear to cost more but it evens out because you feed less in order to give them their nutritional requirements; as a bonus for you they poop less. And you sleep better, not wondering if their food will be the next to be recalled.

NEVER buy dog food from the vet or a grocery store. Most vets recommend Hills Science Diet (garbage) or Eukanuba (more garbage). Get an all natural food at a feed store. To name a few quality brands: Wellness Canidae Chicken Soup For The Dog Lover's Soul Blue Buffalo Timberwolf Merrick Do your research.

I use Wellness. It's human grade food much better than Purina with or without melamine and actually only works out pennies more expensive because the dogs need less.

None of the Wellness produces have been recalled.

Beneful is rated as one of the very worst dog foods on the market. Take it back for a refund.

Feed your dog any food that is not on the recall list. You feed Beneful, that is not a very good food. As a general, any dog food that you can purchase at your supermarket isn't a very good food. The suggestions to feed Canidae, Wellness, Innova, Solid Gold, Natural Balance are valid suggestions. These are all super premium foods.

I have always fed my dog Innova and recently switched to Innova Evo because it's the first dog food without any fillers at all. It's all natural and organic so there isn't anything to worry about. Most of the foods on the recall list were poor quality as it was and purchased the cheapest ingredients to get a profit. Innova charges a bit more but it's worth it for the price. My dog is healthy, active, and has a beautiful coat. Another good thing is that with less fillers you don't have to feed as much and you don't have to clean-up as much feces.

If the food isn't on recall, don't panic. But if you really need to, you can run a google search and find recipes for dog food that you can make and store for yourself. I found a number of wonderful sites for them, but make sure you get those sites. There are also a few twits trying to capitalize on the scare, and at least one I found that was more a senseless rant and play for sympathy- for a dog that probably doesn't even exist. Or didn't.

All of the recalls have been with the moist food. Dry food is better for the dogs. I have used the drugstore/supermarket brands and also premium dog foods which you can only get at places like Pet Smart. I find it is best to watch your dog and see how he responds to the dog food and keep an eye on his bowel movements. Usually the better foods do not have as much odor is his bowel movements and his energy level. Many times the lower priced foods work just as well as the expensive ones so you just have to judge your dog's reaction to it.

Excellent question! I highly recommend the following three foods: Innova, Canidae, or Timberwolf Organics. I am very picky when it comes to choosing food for my dogs, especially because of my profession.

Boiled chicken would not be a complete source of nutrients for your dog anyways :)

Good luck! Hope this helps!!

Return the bag of Beniful.
Find Candiae or Wellness, or even Solid Gold dog food. All natural no by products of any kind. No corn or wheat or soy. Much healthier for your dog.
