You are protected during the placebo week. You will get bleeding during that week. The pill works by preventing ovulation, not by preventing menstruation; however, you can also take the "active" pills for 12 weeks straight (if your doctor says it's ok), and have only 4 periods a year. I did this because I got severe migraines when I had my period, and it was great!
Edit: to add a response to your edit - most women have light periods while on birth control. My usual period lasted about 3 to 4 days while on the pill; it's a nice benefit, especially if you're like me and prone to iron deficiency anemia, because you don't lose as much blood.
I don't think anybody is trying to preach to you (I'm not sure what it is that we'd be preaching) - just trying to give you some good information, which is what you asked for, right?

I believe so even though the placebo pill is kinda like a reminder your already protected for that month. only if you mess up on your pills or starting your pills for the first time you have a good chance of getting pregnant. you should bleed during the placebo pills every month because thats when your period starts.

You are still protected during the inert pills week. However the pill is not 100% effective, I know people who got pregnant while taking it and not missing any. If you do get pregnant, you will most likely miss your period, or notice that it is much lighter.
Also, if your pills are going to fail or if they are taken incorrectly, you can ovulate at ANY time in your cycle, not just 14 days after your period. I had a "scare" a while back and my doctor told me that you could ovulate any time you miss pills, not just mid-cycle.

you need to fully educate yourself on your choice of birth control before taking it. You should go to whichever brand your using web site and study it. Your putting stuff in your body and you don't know how it will work or what it will do to you, thats not very smart and kida irresponsible. Its your body, know what your doing to it and protect it.
It is very important that you take your pill everyday at the EXACT same time, otherwise it will be less effective. No you wont get pregnant during your period week. If you get pregnant you simply will miss a period, in which case you should go to the doctor either way.

If you are taking your birth control regularly and as you should, you should be fine. If you are having heavy periods or breakthrough bleeding, you might need to change birth control. Did you know that women only have a 12-24 hour window in which they can concieve? That is why conception is a miracle. Usually this time is sometime within one week before your period and 24 hours after, it depends on you. However, stay on the birth control.

Yes you are protected. To get pregnant you have to ovulate, and the pill supresses that. When you get your period during the plaebo pills you do not ovulate, because ovulation occurs around 2 weeks after your period begins. When you start the new pack it prevents you from ovulating.

Don't be scared to call your doctor and ask him/her, after all she/he is the one that prescribed them. You should never leave the doctors office if you aren't sure about everything he
/she has informed you about. It is a pill you'll be taking for the next several years.
