As for the bike, go to your local bike shop and get fit properly. If you're going to undertake a cross-country excursion you ought to know your bike fit is crucial! Once you get fit the shop can recommend bikes for your trip based on your size, needs and budget. Make sure you let them know what you're doing and make sure you train hard!

Good luck!!!

In that price range, most bike frames are aluminum and made in China (yes, including the Trek 1000). Not that there's anything wrong with that, but what is going to set the bike apart are the components. Something with Shimano Tiagra or 105 should be available in that price range. I'd try to avoid Sora, as they don't stay as smooth-working over time.

Since you're going to be going transcontinental, you may also want to consider a "touring bike". Still a road bike, they tend to have more upright geometries which can be more comfortable for long distances.

The most important thing is fit, so in any case, make sure you're comfortable on the bike before you buy it. Most local bike shops will fit you and allow you to bring the back bike in within the first 30 days to tweak it, at no additional charge. Also, bike shops tend to have some leftover models from previous years on sale, so shop around.

Trek 1000 is a great bike for the money. I've had Treks since 1983 and have had very good luck. I ride 15000 miles per year with no major problems excepr regular wear and tear.

look for a used trek 2300, the original work horse. you can probably find one for that price range, just be careful to get a used one not an abused one. If you want new your going to sacrifice some component quality for that price.
