the real question is will you get tired running with your border collie. they call them border collies for a reason because when they were in europe they wanted to keep all the collies in portugal but eventually they all ran across the border therefore you have a border collie in the states.

Border collies are extremely athletic dogs, being bred to herd sheep all day every day. However, the speed and distance they are capable of running is, as with humans, dependent on her level of conditioning at the time. If she has been a "couch potato" all her life, is overweight or very young, start her out slowly at short distances and build gradually. As her level of conditioning improves, she should be able to keep up with you with no problems. ALWAYS have her on a leash, and make sure she is well trained to stay by your side without you having to constantly apply pressure to the lead. She needs to be able to breathe freely.....and you do not want her dashing out toward other joggers or pedestrians or autos. Also, she cannot sweat so she needs regular access to cool fresh water during the session so she does not overheat.

It depends on the dogs fitness level. A border collie was bred to herd sheep or cattle all day. You'll probably drop before the dog.
I used to take an Australian silky terrier, about 8 lbs running four miles. One tough little dog.
The later I ran a malamute. He stayed in a small yard, and did not get out much. In 1.5 miles, he'd be worn out and I'd have to almost drag him home.

Border Colliesareveryhigh energy dogs. That said, even high energy dogs will tire from runing after 10-15minutes,but they can walkall day long. Cesar Millan, the Dog Whipserer says that dogs need exercise, discipline and affection-in that order. Running with your Border Collie isa great idea, not only will it be good for you, it willmake her a healthy, happy dog.

Just like a person your dog will have to build up to being able to have the endurance to keep up with you. If she goes on daily walks and is very active, then she should be fine as long as you bring her along some water, too. If she's not used to a lot of exercise, then start out with short jog taking her along and build up her endurance for longer runs. She will probably love it, just remember to let her take some breaks along the way to sniff and enjoy herself, too. With the weather getting warmer, be careful as to the heat and time of day you jog with her....she's jogging wrapped in a fur coat so she will need plenty of water and occassional rest stops. Have fun!

My daughter jogs with our Australian Shepherd all the time. The herding group dogs are made to run. The dogs that are exercised behave better, are more easily trained, and don't get into trouble from being bored as much (like chewing on your stuff).

Dogs don't run like people do. Have you ever seen a dog run continuously that wasn't being dragged down the street on a leash? Dogs run for a while and then stop and rest when they need to. Can't do that on a leash.

dogs need to be conditioned just like humans. If you are in shape and run long distance without the dog being in shape you will wear it out. Plus they do not handle the heat as well as we do. Start off with something easy and let her get conditioned.

If you run far then it will tire, If you run a reasonable distance then I'm sure it can keep up.
