I've never had one and I'm wondering why people get one if you can use your own credit/debt card or cash? Also are there disadvantages?

I would probably avoid a specific 'gas credit card'. They tend to have higher interest rates-- and the rewards are usually limited to a specific brand of stations. You might want to try a more 'generic' gasoline credit card. You can find them here:

Credit cards like the 'Chase Perfect Card' and 'Discover Open Road Card' allow you to earn rebates from your everyday purchases. In particular, they allow you to earn an increased bonus for your gasoline purchases (anywhere from 3%-5%). By receiving a check or credit to your bill, you'll be basically lowering your overall gas costs.

Great option in you can payoff your balances quickly!

The first credit card for gas that you can apply online is the Discover Gas Card.

Another card that is an instant approval card, having gas rewards along with various other rewards is the Hilton Honors Platinum Credit Card. It gives rewards at eligible gas stations, supermarkets, and many other places.

While choosing a credit card that offers you gas back, you should consider whether the rewards should be taken off of the gas or if the purchases at the gas station make you eligible for other types of rewards. E.g. on the Hilton card, you get rewards for your gas purchases but are more of rewards given by Hilton, rather than cash back for gas. So consider this point carefully when applying for a credit card with gas rewards.

Gas station credit cards are easier to get than Bank credit cards. For people who do not have credit cards, gas station credit card is good to have. It helps those who have no credit history to build credit. For the self-employed couriers, it is easier for them to keep track of their gas expenses.

Some gas station credit cards also provide points which you can redeem for goods and services. For those who have bad credit or bankruptcy records, it could be the best credit cards to rebuid credit.

They are just like any other credit card, there aren't many different advantages, just usually a higher interest rate. And you pay earn a certain percentage back or the first few months.

You would have privileges that other consumers would not have.
Disadvantages would be you can only use it at that gas station for purchases. Example if you have a Mobil card you can only use it at Mobil stations.
