find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Limit the amount of snack foods you make available and find an activity that the 2 of you can do together that will burn a few calories. Even if it's just walking around the block or going to the park and walking, it's better than sitting around the house.

You didn't say if your child was male or female, but girls especially tend to get a little chubby just prior to puberty. If that's the case, I wouldn't worry too much. Either way, try not to undermine his/her self esteem by making a big issue out of the weight problem. Be as subtle as possible. Good luck!

Learn to cook less fat, more filling meals. Enroll your 10yr old in some outside exercise they might like to do. Go swimming or something. Remove all the junkfood from the house. Make the whole family learn to eat better instead of just the 10 yr old. Do Family outtings for exercise.

You control what your kid eats (most of the time) so only buy healthy foods and make the entire house eat the same way. If everyone else is eating junk food in front of him and he can't have it, that's psychologically as hurtful as being overweight. Do it along with your kid and show your support

you just need to be open and honest with him without being mean..don't call him names. Tell him that at their age and height they should weigh approx this much..tell him you love him. Tell him you want him to be healthy, you don't wanna see him get sick with things like diabetes and so forth because he is overweight, or have trouble in school and so on. Just approach him in a loving caring way and tell him you are willing to help him and encourage him in getting back to a good weight whatever it takes.

health and fitness is a definite lifestyle change so i applaud you for attempting to introduce your child to it at a young age. i think as parents we need to always remember that we set the example for our children, so if we're gorging on french fries, our children will want to as well. simple suggestion, cut out all the junk food. as far as exercise, try to make it fun for your child. sports, dancing, games that require physical activity (hide and seek, tag..)..are all good ways to get the whole family involved so the child doesn't feel singled out. good luck!
