the pencil won't get erased, but i suggest that you outline it with black ink and not acrylic- ink just looks nicer. or better- outline the pencil with a lettering pen for calligraphy, which, if you don't happen to possess one, is very inexpensive and water resistant. then erase the pencil and do the watercolor background.

Hi:
If you just used a regular pencil or drawing pencil, the pencil lines will most likely persist, and under the watercolor be unerasable. You can get art pencils that are water soluble so they can make interesting gray washes. You might try checking how your pencil marks might work on a test piece of watercolor paper - just make a mark, and try brushing some watercolor over it to see if it stays. Hope this helps.

RE:
Watercolor over pencil?
So I drew a picture outline with pencil, and I want to do a light watercolour wash as the background. I'm thinking I'll do it right over the pencil, then when its dry paint in my lines with acrylic. Will that work or will the watercolour erase the pencil lines?

You can buy different watercolour pencils that are labelled as 'Intense' or 'Vibrant' as well as ones that are earthy tones or pastels and such. I have some I can't remember what brand but are called 'Inktense' they are very good. I think it also depends on how much water you use or how much you colour withthe pencils, thicker pencil generally gives a better colour.

The pencil line is lead and will not absorb water.
The pencil line will be visiable through the watercolour, unless the pencil line is very thin or light, depending on the denisity of the color, and if it is a dark or light color.

Pencil is more waterproof than most ink. No problem there.
