Yes, you can legally wear a bullet proof vest in NYC. However, if you are even suspected of doing something illegal you will also get charged with "unlawful wearing of a body armor".

I am curious to know why you think you need to wear a vest in the city? They're bulky and hot as possible, and quite uncomfortable. I dont even like to wear mine, and I have to.

The easiest way to get the most accurate answer would be to speak directly with the police department itself. I know for a fact that in Indiana and Oregon that there is no laws preventing a "civilian" from purchasing, selling or even wearing for personal use any form of body armor. Also, if you ARE going to wear Kevlar or a similar product, make sure to wear a Kool-Max shirt underneath of it. These shirts help to keep you cool and minimize sweating and the resulting odors collecting onto the Kevlar itself.

i seriously doubt it,nothing against cops, but if you cant be trusted to defend yourself with a gun in ncy,i highly doubt you would be able to protect yourself with a vest.
the logic i am sure is that it would jeapordise cops because crimminals would wear vests, and there is alot of truth in that i am sure.
i just dissagree with the whole nanny state thing,i think every non felon american should be allowed to protect themselves and not have to rely on a reactive police force.
police generally show up after the crime has occurred, not their fault, just the way it is.
i think if cops can have guns, crimminals obviously have them, then so should joe or mary average have the same means to defend themselves.
i doubt an off duty nyc cop would stroll around with out a gun at night,i wouldnt(i am sure they are mandated to carry at all times either way)but at least they have protection of some sort.
i see no reason why the average person should not be permitted to wear body armor if so inclined.
if you must, enhance penalties for committing a crime wearing body armor like they do with committing a crime with a gun.

Why not? A bullet proof vest is not a restricted item as far as I know.

it,s not the bullet that you got to worry about it,s a knife i talked to some officers here in sacramento ca about that and they told me stright out that there more scared of a knife going thru the vest then the bullet.
