I am about to go out and job hunt after several years of big mistakes. I have a misdemeanor on my record for retail theft that I am paying back and am currently on methadone treatment for heroin addiction. I am committed to a clean life and a better future. My family is very supportive, but I am worried about what to do when applying for a job (I have a college degree). My misdemeanor will show up and if I am drug tested the methadone will show (I am in a clinical program for this treatment). Any suggestions?

Most companies won't ask about a misdemeanor...they'll only ask about felonies. Lots of people have misdemeanors on their records, and their employers never know ('cause they don't really care).

If you're drug tested, just tell them the truth...Bring a copy of the prescription, or a note from your doctor that clarifies that it is being done under the advice of a physician.

Much of the time, the companies that do the drug tests are not the same as the company that's doing the hiring...They'll report back to the employer about the findings, but only for the drugs that the employer has asked for tests on...if methodone isn't on the list, the employer will probably never even know about it.

If you're truly committed to being clean, they'll appreciate your honesty and sincere efforts to get yourself a better life. Employers WANT people who want to better themselves.

Congratulations, and good luck!

i would be completely honest before they find out from the tests. you would be surprised at the number of people who have gone through similar circumstances as you and have been given the chance to start over. there will be disappointments so you should prepare yourself but don't ever give up. someone somewhere will understand you and give you a chance. good luck!
