This is the step in the process of defragmentation where the data is reassembled from its multiple locations on the disk into sequentially written data. Once assembled it is moved in whole to its proper new location on the disk.

think of a library with scattered books not in place, well defrag
put s these scattered files in place

It's the same thing as "compression".
