It decreases the size so that you use less HD space. Like for example you use WINRAR to compress a file, the file will decrease in size. (10MB--->maybe 2MB).

compressing files mean changing their format to make them smaller so you use less space and also useful for sending files that need to be compressed in order to be able to send them because of size and speed
