Brought a digital cam the other day but didn't work out to well, now I am trying to see what are some important factors to look for when purchasing a digital camera?

You can go there and pick a category according to how much money you plan to spend and look at the recommendations. There are so many things to look for that we have to rely on third party testing to sort them out. This chart (Steve's) help you make a buying decision.

Facial detection
anti-shake (not just high ISO)
5 to 8 megapixels (don't go too high for small sensors)
2.5 to 3" viewing LCD
at least 3x optical zoom (ignore digital zoom)
video quality (30fps) with sound
macro focus range (if you like closeups)
flash guide (how far with the flas reach)
optical viewfinder

need to look at the pixels the higher the better and optical shots...

You want to make sure it has enough pixels and megapixals
