Fears are simply a reaction to some kind of stimuli that got your mind truckin' along that path of thought. If you let it, it can prevent "good things from happening", however if you learn to get to the root of the fear and understand it for what it is, if it's logical or not (i.e. healthy "fear" or respect for the real dangers certain things possess) you can cultivate a calmer mind, but it's up to YOU to change your mind and/or decide. Unless it's tearing your life apart, then a little professional help is a good thing, and nothing to be ashamed of.

I think that your fears can cause you to react in a way to where something could happen. Say you fear spiders. I spider falls down from the sunvisor in your car while your driving. You freak out and slam on the brakes or turn the steering wheel really hard. You have a wreck because your fear of the spider.

Fears can also keep good things from happening becasue you are afraid to take the leap. Say you were the person who came up with coca cola. However times were bad and money was short. So you didn't take the step to get your business off the ground. Your fear of not having enough money held you back from making millions.

Fear is a very primitive emotion found in most animals. It serves a very important function by keeping animals (including humans) from doing stupid and dangerous things.

Of course, society is much more complex for humans than it is for, say, reptiles, so sometimes fear inhibits us from doing important things like speaking in public (though anxiety is different from raw fear).

It can work both ways but for the most part, fear holds us back. It keeps us from being everything we can be. It keeps us from reaching for the stars.
