Most cities and towns (and even the State Patrol) give out the 'guns' with the badge ... but many cops buy their own guns and use them in 'policework' if they're 'approved' for that. I can't say whether the 'taxes' pay for the guns or whether that comes from 'other government funds' ... that would depend on WHICH POLICE FORCE you were asking about ...

No, the police department in which a particular officer works pays for the equipment the officer uses (including the gun).
Sometimes the department will allow an officer to carry a gun of his or her choice at his or her expense.

things are different all over tye country. some depts make you carry what they issue. many depts do not issue yout duty guns.some will reimburse some of the monies spent. most will not give you a dime . what the depts will do is tell you what kind of gun and ammo you can and can not carry.there will be a wide range of choices

Here in my city we are issued a gun and must use that one. We are not allowed to carry any other gun.
