How am I supposed to get my 80 + pound dog to roll over? Also, is there anything that I can do to make him obey better? It's like he has selective hearing.... Also, heh, I taught him to shake, oh, yeah he does it, but sometimes when I'm sitting in a chair reading and he wants attention he'll try to shake and it scratches up my leg.... I don't like to fuss at him because he's soooo sweet and I can hardly ever get mad at him. HELP?

Do his nails need to be trimmed? That might have a part in the scratching.

As for tricks, what the person said about repetition and treats is what worked for my dog. He's not the brightest but he can "give paw," "speak" and "sit up" (on two legs).

Also, maybe you could try teaching "roll over" to him in steps. Like, first lie down. Next. tip over. Next, on the back. I don't know. Just a thought.

Research clicker training. Without the clicker, it's also called marker training.

And no, your dog doesn't have selective hearing. He's just smart. I took a food-crazy GSD to training. The instructor had everyone given any other dog a treat if it sat. My genius figured this out in 10 minutes, and then she proceeded to sit for everyone in the class.

She barfed in the car back from class.

For you, give her a treat (when she's hungry) for going down.
When she's doing that on her own, give her a treat for laying on her side.
When she's doing that on her own, give her a treat for laying on her back.
When she's doing that on her own, give her a treat for rolling from one side to another.
When she's doing that on her own, give her a treat for rolling over & then standing.
When she's doing that, prompt her with "Roll Over" & treat her after she's rolled over.

A clicker trainer will give you more precise instructions. Best of luck.

It might not be a bad idea to enroll your pup in a training class. I took my dog, Bella, to PetSmart, and they taught us all those tricks, plus behavioral tools. Also, just being in a "class" with other dogs is so much fun for them; it's great for socialization.

Anyways, "roll over" is a relatively simple concept, but it takes practice before the dog actually does it flawlessly. Just get your dog to lie down, hold a cookie in your hand, put it towards his nose so he smells it, then carry it around towards his shoulder while saying "Roll over!" Eventually, he'll get the idea. Good luck!

For the selective hearing lol, maybe an obedience class would do him good. Rolling over, start in a drop position and with a treat teach him to lay over onto his side once he can do that then move the treat over his head so that he has to turn over to follow it. At the same time say "Roll" eventually they get it.

Just put him on a down and take a treat in one hand & put it front of his nose make him get on his side by following the treat once there bring the treat around to make him roll over by following the treat. Once he does give him the treat and praise him. You can say roll over or just over. This will save your back as well. Good luck;^)

First, enroll yourself and the dog in a good obedience class. This will teach you about dog behavior and how to teach your dog commands. To teach a dog to roll over it first needs to know how to "lay", and to do the lay it usually is taught the "down" command, and before this is taught it is taught the "sit" command. Once the dog knows the "lay" command they you give it the "roll over" command while grabbing one front and one rear leg. Manually roll the dog over. Repeat until the dog gets it. After the dog learns the command it can be done from the "down" without having to go through the "lay". Bearing in mind that I'm a skilled dog trainer, I could teach a dog, that is already reliable in basic commands, the "roll over" in 10 to 20 minutes. Your results may vary.
