A lot of drama at my work place has happened over the last week. Saturday a few people went to the head boss to discuss the rumors and drama. Tomorrow afternoon there will be a meeting to discuss the drama and possibly some firing. I honestly have not said anything about anyone, but there has been some rumors going on about me, as well as a few other girls. I will say that I was one of the girls who went to HR department. These rumors can cause relationship problems, as well as personal problems. I know I'm not in highschool anymore, and I should just ignore them, but these rumors are too serious to ignore. Tomorrow is the big day. Everyone knows the head lady who has started these rumors. Pretty much what she does is take something innocent that I say, and turn it into something huge and misleading. Well, I'm nervous but I'm up to it. So my question is, "How can I handle the meeting?" Should I bring notes? Has anyone gone through this before? Any help would be appreciated.

You have described a typical workplace. This happens all across America every day.

Reading your details, you must work mostly with women. My wife does too and has been to such meetings.

First, if you are not involved you don't need any notes. If you are, be prepared to admit it and promise to never do it again.

Either way, keep quiet at the meeting as someone here has advised.

1) Don't volunteer anything, even if asked.

2) Don't give hearsay. Only talk about what you know first hand.

3) Make suggestions, if they ask for them, that will make your workplace more friendly and productive. My wife's suggestions for creating teams were adopted which cut the gossiping and backstabbing to just a few instigators who are now the focus of management.

4) Do you work to your utmost ability and stay away from office politics even at break time and lunchtime. If gossip starts, change the subject.

Best of luck.

The best approach to a situation is think about it tonight, prepare mentally, and YES bring notes if you think you need them. You never know how heated the discussion may get in the meeting and you don't want to lose your cool or your train of thought.

When possible, stay out of the drama at work. Yes, I realize sometimes the drama sucks you in against your will. When this happens just remember to stay calm and take the high road.

Since you haven't written the agenda for the meeting, you're there at someone else's pleasure. Contribute only if asked. Say as little as possible, say nothing if no one asks you anything. Appear interested and listen politely to everyone else. Listening gets you into much less trouble than talking!
