My boss just found out she had cancer in her bum. It is at the base of the anus and she is going to have a piece of it cut out next week. How am i supposed to comfort her? Does anyone have any experience with some like this? This woman has been such a role model and gide for me, I am really concerned.

A friend of mine had that general type of cancer. Luckily my friend had a sense of humor and could joke about it.

Generally, it doesn't matter so much where the cancer gets a person, they're fighting cancer, and they can use your help. Do whatever they want, even if what they want is "leave me alone for a while."

When I was got cancer, the reaction of some people was to give me gifts! Like movies and books. That was nice. And some family members offered to move in with us and help out around the house. And my wife sort of wanted people to invite her to movies or dinner out or something, because I couldn't do that for her for a while.

Regardless of where the cancer is, or what disease a person has, comforting them is the same across the board.

You simply say, "I'm so sorry about your troubles...Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help." And then you drop the subject, and simply be their friend, just like you were doing before. Bringing it up repeatedly only reminds them of the problem...just being you brings normalcy, which is very comforting.
