I'd rather be a wolf, a cougar, or any other apex predator, but I'm stuck being human ;)
As for the origin of man, I'll stick with australopithecus afarensis.

Monkey, easily.
Many monkeys and monkey-like species are sentient and relatively intelligent.
Dirt is just dirt. It's hard to "be" dirt while still being recognizable as a living thing.

A pile of dirt.
Really, though, I'd rather be neither of the two. I'd rather be an Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.
I feel the beat coming upon me and I can't stop it...
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Turtles in a half shell. Turtle Power. COWABUNGA!"

Well, I suppose eventually we will all be dirt, but I'll take a monkey, intelligent beings they are.

Driftwood.
Google "Ask and Embla." (Ash and Elm in Old Norse)
"Soul they had not, sense they had not,
Heat nor motion, nor goodly hue;
Soul gave Odhinn, sense gave Hoenir,
Heat gave Lothur and goodly hue." (Voluspa 18)
Because, obviously, a world as complex and marvelous as ours, and organisms as advanced as ourselves, can only be explained adequately by a giant, a cow, and three gods finding and animating some driftwood on a beach.
