I have a 9 year old Shih Tzu, he has been on glucosomine, but it doesn't seem to be working. Is there any other options to help him get around better? He has been limping more lately.

This is going to sound crazy, but a vet told me about this and it worked on my 15 year Sheltie who was not able to make it up stairs until I did this. Go to any health food store and get Yucca capsules and Alfalfa capsules.Give your dog one of each just open up the capsules and put it in his food. With that size dog you could start out with half of each. My girl didn't even need aspirin once she was on this everyday. Good luck with your baby;^)

If she is over weight it would help to loss a few pounds but even if she is at a healthy weight you might want to drop about three pound off her. Also, check the quality of food. The first ingredient should be a meat product. Food primarily based on fillers will result in the development of calcifications in the joints. If she is having problems with a specific area such as the hips, fore-legs, or legs you can try applying ice for several minutes. Some vets may prescribe Rimadyl but this should only be used in emergency cases because it causes the liver the break down. Asprin is also a bad idea because it deteriorates the stomach linning. Also, offer her climate control and a soft bed to sleep on. Allow her plenty of exercise but not too much. If you stop exercising her the joints will lock-up causing more pain. The vet can also prescribe Cosequin which is a combination of glucosamine and other joint preserving compounds.

we have a 10year old 3 legged dog. She lost her leg at 4 months old. My vet had us use Ascripton (sp?) which is a Malox coated asprin when she needed it until about a year ago. After that quit working we got a prescription for Rymadil (sp?). Now she takes a tablet a day. It has made a big difference for her but it is not cheap. $90 a bottle.

I definitely suggest you visit your vet. My vet prescribed Cosequin for my 15-yr-old border collie. She is also on Rimadyl, both of which help some.

It really depends on how much cartiledge is left to work with.

Fortunately for you, your Shih Tzu is relatively light (compared to my 40 lb border collie, that is), so if need be you can help your dog out by carry him.

Good luck...and make that vet appointment!

Take the dog to the vet and have it examined. Then you will have an answer. Rimadyl (prescription) has helped dogs. Also a daily regime of aspirin (you vet will tell you when and how much) can be very effective.

I recommend Longevity. http://springtimeinc.com/product/172/2
It is a great supplement for any dog, but especially an older dog.
It has ingredients for joints as well as immunity and great natural sources of nutrients like spirulina.

Rimadyl, joint supplements, asprin. Talk to your vet about what treatments they have available, they probably have several different medications available as well as some non-medicine treatments. There are also many homeopathic alternatives out there as well.

Rimadyl is the best medicine for my dachshund's arthritis and bone spurs.
