the number 3 has been a sacred number for many religions, so it can mean many things within paganism. Others have said Maiden, Mother, Crone, which is very true of modern Wicca. There are also many gods and goddesses with triple aspects, such as Brighid, a Celtic goddess with the aspects of smithing, healing and learning. It can mean mind, body, and soul. There are symbols that are protective symbols, an example being the Triskele, which is 3 connected swirling circles. 3X3 is another way to express that... in knot magic, tying 9 knots into the cord can be very powerful.

In my tradition, it represents the tripartic world. Three was/is a very sacred number to the Celts. A trinity can represent the three realms of land, sky, and sea; the three kindreds of the Gods, Sidhe, and Ancestors; the three cauldrons of vocation, wisdom, and incubation; and so much more.
