Shotgun most will say. Better chance of hitting your target in small areas. 12ga or 20ga pump.
I choose the Handgun. .40S&W or .45ACP in Springfield XD. I never leave home without it and it stays ready in my home aswell.

The best gun is the one you have when you need it. Most of the people here will tell you a .45 is the ultimate weapon. They are great, but they can get a little pricey, bulky, and overpowering for a new shooter. Me personally, I think a .357 snub-nose is a good concealed carry gun. You get just as many rounds as a micro .45, and revolvers always shoot. Autos need a lot of maintenance, need to have mags swapped out at least once a week, and even then, they can misfire and jam. A revolver can be loaded and carried every day with little or no worry, and the .357 will crack engine blocks, but you can load down to a .38 and still be lethal.

I agree with MRS,. The best defense gun for most people is the shotgun. Dont have to be as accurate, depending on the load it is not likely to go through too many walls and kill neighbors next door, is pretty intimidating but dont count on that as a factor. Hard to shoot yourself with, and will let someone know they did something wrong even if it does not flat out kill them.
I suggest you wrap some white tape around the last 6 inches of barell so you can get a feel of where it is pointing in the dark. You'll have to school everyone in the house on its use, force, and consequences. Have them all shoot it without ear phones at least a few times. If you can have them shoot outside in the dark or almost complete dark, at a human sized target, do that also.
There are even simple exercises where you blink your eyes closed at the moment of firing to save your night vision.
Main thing is to be good with what you have, be it a .22 pistol or a 12 gauge. Practice, know the law and make sure everyone in the house knows this also.

357, If you don't intend to practice alot get a good double action revolver like a Ruger GP 100. 357 has the highest percentage of "1 shot stops" in other words if you shoot someone once a 357 will stop them 93 percent of the time, the 45 is closer to 77% and everything else is less. A double action takes more deliberate effort to fire and is less likely to go off "accidentally" firing before you are ready or shooting something you didn't mean to shoot. Also look into ammunition types, if this is strictly for home defense and you have others in the house or live in an urban area, Glaser safety slugs or MagSafe ammo (both designed not to pass thru walls) are a very good idea.

The best gun is the one that is in your hand when you need it. If you're buying a handgun for home security, depending on your level of expertise, you would need a revolver or a small automatic pistol. If you're getting a revolver you might as well get a .357 Magnum even if you only intend to load .38s in it. If you're getting an auto a .380 acp or .9mm will do.
Best.

That is a question that know one can answer. Ones weapon of choice will be based on preference. I loved my standard issue M4, but others prefer the M16 because it has better accuracy. I hate the standard issue Beretta 9mm, but others love it. It's all based on preference, and what you plan to do with it. For security you can go with high fire power with low max clip capacity, or you can go with something more like a 9mm with 15 in the clip, and one in the chamber. Personally I would go with a .45 (.40 at the least) of various of various weapons. Most people just develop a feel for the right weapon. You should go to your local gun store with a shooting range, and try a few out.

Taurus recently released what i believe may be what your looking for its a 5 shot revolver capable of holding .410 shotgun ammo or the popular 45 colt ammo. I'm thinking this might be the best home or auto protection handgun yet.
but for something to just keep at your house... a stoeger industries model 2000 defense semi-auto 12 ga. or get a rottweiler.

If you do alot of deer hunting like I do then you need a Remington model 700 (.300 short mag) Its a great gun. This year I have killed 7 deer the farthest one being about 350 yards away. It dropped every one of them in their tracks.
