I like to get him books on home repair because he is a good plumber but his carpentry skills leave something to be desired. My question is why do men not like to read about fixing things or how to put things together? It just drives me crazy. I'm sure its a ego thing but isn't it much easier to read and do things right the first time?

They sometimes believe that because they have a penis that is the storage center for the brain that includes the instructions on plumbing and home repair. Subscribe him to a magazine.

The fixing stuff without reading instructions comes from the kid in us :) We want to play. Sure our goal is to fix it in the end, but we want to figure it out. It has to be our achievement. Our wits against the raging elements. Or disrepair as the case may be :P Men still have a child in them, and home repair is a great way for us to indulge the child by playing with toys :)

This is part of their charm, in that the will try, try and try again, but en up failing rather than read the manual. It is an insult to their male pride by admiting that they can't do something.

You must have heard the joke about men asking for directions? This is a simular thing.

Bless them all!!!!

Guys never read the instructions. A self-help or how-to book is insulting to them.

many men are tactile learners. they learn by doing. i'm the same way. i'll read the directions for a specific item but, for the most part, i don't want to read about it, i want to do it.

Get him a gift certificate for your hardware store. Then he can pick a book or tool he wants.
