Don't throw them away just yet and don't "live with them."
Call the guy and ask him if he wants them first so that if he or one of his friends sees them sitting on the curb, he won't take you to small claims court and make a bogus claim against you for the supposed value of the property.
Exes can be mean. Keep that in mind and cover your bases.

I'd say, replace it a.s.a.p.
If he really GAVE it to you, and you're not going to get any stick from him over it later, sell it through the local paper or eBay, if its value makes it worth the hassle - but second-hand furniture does not fetch much these days. Otherwise, let someone benefit from it, rather than just smashing it. In the UK, we can't just put things out on the pavement expecting that someone might want it, though that is done in eg The Netherlands. (We can only put things out on the pavement in UK if we have booked a date for the Council to take it away as rubbish.) But there are furniture stores run like charity shops by the Salvation Army and other voluntary agencies. They give furniture away to people in need, or sell it at low second-hand prices to others and then use the money to help people. They would pick it up for you and take it off your hands. And if you buy some other stuff from them, they would deliver that at the same time as picking up the old. You would just need to wait until they have something you would like by way of replacement. And even if it was not entirely to your taste, it would tide you over. And if you want to have something new, there's a certain big Scandinavian store selling innovative furniture very cheaply! Lots of people sneer about IKEA, but its furniture is surprisingly well-made, for the price.
You could use a couple of throws in the meantime, to disguise the old stuff!
It was a nice thought, from the contributor who hoped you would find a new guy to sit on the new furniture with you. But I'd say - take time to rediscover yourself, and enjoy just being you for a while, with a few friends round. All the best!

If I was you I would put them up for sale, at least that way you'd make a little cash back to be able to replace the most important bits. I had someone do the same to me and that's what I did, I must admit some things were hard to sell cos even tho he'd got them for me I really liked them but needs must, have a garage sale or do a car boot and get what you can for them, if you're doing a car boot you never know you could pick up some replacements really cheap. Go girl,,,, wash him outta your life.

That's a crunch. Tell ya what, pick an item to replace, a chair say, and when you have the replacement, take the chair out to the curb on trash day, in case somebody wants it. Then pick another item to replace, and so on.
But of course, if you would feel good about busting up the stuff, then go ahead with that. But only after you have the replacement.

It would just be spiteful if you smashed everything up he gave you. I would keep them, i think you had a lucky escape. You could get some throws for the furniture to cover them up. You will meet somebody even better soon.

Have a yard sale and sell them! Then you can get rid of the old furniture and the memories, and score some cash for new furniture too!

You could throw some pretty sheets over them. Or you could donate them to Goodwill and buy some comfortable plastic patio resin chairs and pretty cushions. Throwing out the furniture (er, donating them) might help you get the bum completely out of your mind.

You don't need to be reminded of him every time you look at it. Drag them outside and let somebody steal them. Then go out and buy yourself some big cushions to sit on until you can afford a new couch.
