My art teacher was telling me there is something in diet sodas that cause cancer. He also said there is something in tomatoes that help prevent the cancer. He's a great guy, but I really need to find out if it's true because I'm always drinking diet pepsi. Anyone know for sure? Sure answers, not guesses, are appreciated. Thank you.

Your teacher might be right : read this article from the Internet then you would need to determine whether or not you have a habit that needs to be addressed with over use of this product. Some studies state that you can get Alzheimer's disease from drinking from of aluminum cans. Read on :Artificial sweeteners are added to a wide variety of food, drinks, drugs and hygiene products. Since their introduction, the mass media have reported about potential cancer risks, which has contributed to undermine the public's sense of security. It can be assumed that every citizen of Western countries uses artificial sweeteners, knowingly or not. A cancer-inducing activity of one of these substances would mean a health risk to an entire population. We performed several PubMed searches of the National Library of Medicine for articles in English about artificial sweeteners. These articles included 'first generation' sweeteners such as saccharin, cyclamate and aspartame, as well as 'new generation' sweeteners such as acesulfame-K, sucralose, alitame and neotame. Epidemiological studies in humans did not find the bladder cancer-inducing effects of saccharin and cyclamate that had been reported from animal studies in rats. Despite some rather unscientific assumptions, there is no evidence that aspartame is carcinogenic. Case-control studies showed an elevated relative risk of 1.3 for heavy artificial sweetener use (no specific substances specified) of >1.7 g/day. For new generation sweeteners, it is too early to establish any epidemiological evidence about possible carcinogenic risks. As many artificial sweeteners are combined in today's products, the carcinogenic risk of a single substance is difficult to assess. However, according to the current literature, the possible risk of artificial sweeteners to induce cancer seems to be negligible.
Just don't abuse it and you will be fine !!! If you are a female you should cut back on the use of dietary sugars. The best one so far is Spenda. Also some of these sodas left out in heat with artifical sugars can turn back to wood grain alcohol. Becareful with the products you use. Search governemnt study of soldiers effected by this during there tour in the Desert Storm War. You will be surprised of your answer. GOOD LUCK

Some years ago their was something about sugar substitute in diet drinks that has a link to cancer, but I cannot recall if it was withdrawn. I do not drink fizzy drinks. Tomatoes are antioxidants and so are classed as a good food to stop other food oxidizing, thereby reducing the chances of some form of cancers. No one knows 'for sure' because their never is a 'for sure' in life, like am I 100% 'for sure' I will wake up tomorrow morning? No one can state I will for sure, because I could have a heart attack in my sleep, stroke, the house could fall down, catch fire, these are all possibilities. I did possibilities in Maths Class, long time ago. All they can say is recent findings are.............
By the time you hit 40, you will be faced with new findings, 50 more finding, 60, yep it will be new findings and so on.

Nonsense. Like a zillion people drink diet soda, and they don't get cancer.

I notice he's not your science teacher.

I'd advise you not to drink all that caffeine in any case. I used to drink caffeine all the time, and then I quit, and I have the exact same level of energy now that I had when I was drinking all the caffeine. Caffeine is NOT your friend. It's addicting, too.
