I have a small room, (10ft. x 10ft. to be exact!) Out of 4 walls, one of them has my door, 2 of them has a window, and one of them has 2 closets, (both of which are mostly not mine). On 2 and 2/3 walls, there is desk, and the other third has the twin bed. There are no walls left for a comfy chair or a bookcase! And all of the walls are bumpy and feel cool all the time. The walls are painted a light green with the trim a light pink. I don't know how to make it look like there is more space. (And I know a few tricks like placing mirrors and playing with light.) Tips please!!!

There have been several good ideas expressed ahead of me, like the one about using the closets (maybe with doors removed) to house as much as possible. A simple 1 by 12 wood shelf run completely around the room at the top of the door and or windows (and painted the same color as the walls) can hold a lot of memory items, teddy bears, dolls, etc. without taking up any usable room. But the one infallible and easy way to make a room "look" bigger is to paint the ceiling darker. This is a guaranteed thing. The lightest color in front of your eyes looks farthest away. Therefore our stupid orthodoxy of the "white ceiling" makes any "non-white" room look smaller. Use a neutral color from the room (floor colors often work) , at least a shade or two darker than the walls, and paint the ceiling that color the room instantly "looks" bigger.

I had a room of my own when I grew up and all those years I never had a chair. There is really no need for a chair in a small room. I'd just use the bed. If you can raise the bed on like stilts you can put stuff under the bed that might free up some closet space for your books. You didn't say how big the desk is but I never had a desk either when living at home, however maybe you can line your books up across that desk, or install a 2 shelved bookcase above the desk. Don't just attach it to the wall but make sure there's about a foot or so of wood on each side so your desk has some space between it and the first shelf. If you have a bathroom you use and it doesn't get too damp in there there is a metal type extender that you can put above the toilet that has shelves and you can put your books on there. Or, if there's enough room in your bedroom maybe you can buy or make a headboard for your bed that could hold your books on one level and small lamps on the top part. The only way I know in small rooms to make it look like there's more space is to make the walls white, the curtains white, the curtains to "not" extend to the floor (maybe you can put a book shelf below the windows. Any room other than white will make it look smaller. You can remove any pictures or fixtures in the room as well as that will make the room look smaller too. Also, if the closet doors are painted white the room will look larger. A white pull down "shade" on the window instead of blinds will make the room look larger too. Is your bedspread white? That will make the room look larger too. It's ok to have color sheets and pillowcases because that gets covered during the day. When you choose white paint use the medium to bright white (not eggshell color) and semigloss so it's easy to clean. If you choose gloss it will crack easily.

1] storage under bed
2] clean out the closets! What kinds of doors do they have?
a] put a bookcase in the closet, and maybe a small dresser; or stack up milk crates for storage
b] if big enough, put the desk in the closet [ make sure there's an outlet for your lamp/computer ]; and you'll have room for a chair
c] put a decorative shelf over your bed for alarm clock, lamp, etc.
3] buy a print in a small pattern [ checks, floral, paisley, stripes ] for the bedding and the curtains. Use one of the lighter colors for the walls, with a second color or brighter shade of the same color for the trim.
4] Use color one or two for lamps, chair, rugs [ large accessories ]; and the other color for lampshades, pillows, candles [ small accessories].
5] frame pictures/posters in same materials/colors - oak or walnut, brass or silver, color one or color two.
Pick one or two warm, but not hot colors [ pink, peach, or butter, not hotpink, orange, or lemon ].
Good luck, and have fun!

First of all you need to place the bed first. The foot should be facing the door if possible. Next, get rid of other peoples things in your room. Because you can use the closet to house a dresser or a book shelf. Another thing you can do is hang the book shelf over a chair or set it on the dresser.

Get a Camper's folding recliner chair. You can find a spot to put it when you want to sit in it, then fold it up and stash it under the bed or in the closet. I've seen them at Walmart, and
Kmart. Is there any way you can get a loft bed? then you would have space under the bed for a dresser, or chair and lamp. Good Luck!
