Check the directory where the file was saved and see if there's a file with the same name but an extension of .wbk. If so, this file is the way the document looked when you last started editing it. Change the extension to.doc and you have a leg up on recovery.

Good luck.

It hasn't happened to me, but if the document you were working on has been savd then my advice would have been to do a system restore, however you say you have it turned off so I don't know if it will be possible but give it a try.. if you can then go back to before whatever change was made the necessated the restarting of your p.c.

Make a saved copy of the mangled file, then start word and open the file using the file - open dialog. In the file type box scroll down to "recover text from any file" and select this. You should get something back, but you will need to check it for formatting, missing bits &c. If this doesn't get most of the file back then you've got a bit of typing to do. TIP set word to autosave every few minutes, it means you will always have most of your work protected

Don't listen to the idiot that advised you to do a system restore they obviousley don't know what the system restore point is for. I will tell you it's not for programes it's simply to put your computer back to a time where it was running perfect and thats all it's for...you will just have to re-do your essay. Sorry
