Purina is not a very good dog food but, a bacterial infection for a food? Doesn't make any sense. Maybe in a canned dog food but then you would notice the can bulging. Bacteria is not going to live very long in a dry dog food. When dry food is bad it is from a fungus which produces a mycotoxin. This can kill a dog and happens every few years to one company or another.

You had the food tested already? This is going to take several days to a week unless you want to plunk down some big bucks.

Do you have proof of testing from the vet stating that it was the food that caused the problem?? What do you mean by almost lost him? What were his symptoms?

What did the testing say was in the food that could of caused a bacterial infection? Did your vet check this dog for Leptospirosis? Did he do a Heliobacter test? Check for pancreatitis or gallbladder problems? What did the medical tests show on your dog? What was the dog food tested for and what was the results?

Also, what was your dogs platelet count when you brought him in to the vet? Has your vet thought of Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis? What kind of dog is this?
"What are the signs seen with HGE in dogs?
The most notable sign seen with HGE is a very sudden onset of bloody diarrhea in a previously healthy dog. Vomiting, not eating (anorexia), and listlessness are also seen. Dehydration is not usually clinically seen on initial presentation, but shock can develop quickly without treatment.

What causes HGE?
At this time, the exact cause of this disease is unknown. There are many theories - diet, a bacterial infection or bacterial toxin, virus, reaction to an intestinal parasite, etc. - but nothing has been proven. Stress may play a role in the development of HGE. Dogs that have an episode of HGE may be prone to another occurrence. Many dogs never experience HGE. "

A dog if treated can normally come out of an HGE episode. If left untreated, they can die.

I bought a bag of Purina in late January from Northwest Indiana and my dog almost died. She was on it since she was a puppy. NEVER Again will I give any animal Purina. My dog is my child and what her and our family have been through is HORRIBLE. I don t want any other Family getting hurt until they look into the situation.

Sometimes animals will get sick if we switch their food too quickly. You are supposed to add a few pieces at each feeding with the brand you are already using and increase it each time while taking away the same amount of the old food until your pet is completely switched over to the new food. You may be right and maybe there is something wrong with the food but unless you are certain because of tests that were done they don't assume it was necessarily that brand of food. I hope your dog gets better soon.

Did the vet say that it was the food that was the problem? Has the food been sent to a lab? It's so hard to know what to feed. Canidae could be on the recall list next week. Thanks for the info.

this is the second posting I have seen about this dog food. The other posters friend has lost her dog from it. If this is true (which I have no reason to not believe you) They need to come out with it before more die or get severely ill dangit.
